Seal’s new Leica Q2 “Dawn” is wrapped in fabric

The Leica Q2 is one of the brand’s best-selling cameras. It’s easy to see why, with its fixed 27mm f/1.2 lens, rugged design and full-frame image quality, it’s a great companion to take anywhere. Since its launch in 2019, there have been a number of limited edition variants, most recently the Leica Q2 “007” model and the Leica Q2 Monochrom “Reporter” edition (which I personally love). Now the Wetzlar brand is back with another fresh variation; we present to you, the Leica Q2 “Dawn” from Seal.

Seal, the British singer best known for his 90s soul hit, Kissed by a rose, is apparently a big fan of photography. Meanwhile, the folks at Leica weren’t shy about talking about their passion for rock and roll. The brand has already partnered with Lenny Kravitz on several models and even released a model in honor of the late music photographer Jim Marshall. That is to say, this mashup looks natural.

Seal’s Leica Q2 ‘Dawn’: Camera details

So what makes the Seal camera special? The body itself is wrapped in a cool looking “iridescent” woven fabric, sourced from traditional Japanese brand, Hosoo. According to Leica, the fabric is “a milestone in the art of weaving, with an innovative process using black yarn (93% polyester) and gold Japanese paper (7% washi)”. No word on how it feels in hand, but each model seems to have a completely unique design.

The only other details that distinguish the Q2 Seal Edition from the standard model are the artist’s signature and edition number engraved on the back, below the LCD screen glass. Other than that, this camera is like any other Q2.

But wait, there’s more! In addition to the camera itself, the Q2 Seal Edition comes with an attractive limited edition black rope strap with leather accents. Details on the strap include the handwritten lyrics, “You have become the light of the dark side of me”, from the smash it mentioned above. The Leica logo is also engraved on the leather. It is unknown if Seal himself wrote the lyrics 500 times. We’re guessing, no.

The package also includes a scarf designed by multimedia artist Annina Roescheisen and made by New York fashion brand rag & bone. It’s certainly not my cup of tea, but hey, everyone has their own taste.

Pricing & Availability

While some Leica Limited Edition versions come with sky-high price tags, looking at the Leica Q2 007 Edition, the Dawn by Seal Edition is only $200 more than the standard model. And given that it comes with a cute rope strap and designer scarf, that’s not too bad!

At a price of $5,995.00, only 500 Leica Q2 Seal models will be manufactured and sold. Currently, the camera is out of stock on Leica’s website, but you can sign up to be notified when it returns. We seriously doubt that all 500 are counted yet.
